Xbox just dropped a bombshell in the handheld space. After months of rumors, Microsoft and ASUS’ ROG division confirmed their gaming handhelds the ROG Xbox Ally and the more powerful Ally X during the Xbox Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest. Xbox looks to shake up the handheld wars and solve some challenges its competitors have including improved UI, better app functionality, and access to a bigger catalog of titles.

The Xbox Ally and Ally X offer a portable, user-friendly gaming experience with features like a full-screen Xbox interface and access to games across major PC storefronts. Optimized for Windows 11, both devices include a revamped Game Bar and ASUS’s Armoury Crate for easy navigation, app control, and customization using a controller. With full Windows compatibility, players can enjoy unmatched versatility running apps, downloading mods, and gaming across platforms, all from one handheld.

Why two? What’s the difference?

For those seeking more power, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a high-performance upgrade designed for serious, demanding players. Both devices support native play, cloud gaming, and remote access to your Xbox console, giving you the freedom to game however and wherever you want.

Both handhelds also simplify gaming by aggregating your libraries from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC storefronts into one seamless full-screen experience eliminating the hassle of switching between apps and logins. With Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud support, your progress, achievements, and favorite games sync across console, PC, and handheld, letting you pick up and play anywhere. At launch, players can also enjoy optimized Roblox gameplay, a Game Pass trial, and new tools like Gaming Copilot all designed to make handheld gaming faster, easier, and more connected.

When and where can I get it?

The release date hasn’t been set but it will be during the holiday season. The handhelds will launch first in a wide range of countries Australia, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and even Portugal made the list. And yes, shockingly enough, the US is included too. Because apparently, after months of hype and speculation, Microsoft figured it might be a good idea to actually release their much-anticipated handhelds in their home market.

I’m still interested…how much?

The official price wasn’t shared but people are speculating it will cost around $800-based on the price of the ROG Ally system. Xbox did confirm that price, pre-orders and accessories information is coming soon.

I come from this culture. I marched in Morehouse College’s “House of Funk” Marching Band. My father marched in Southern University’s “Human Jukebox”. For us, marching bands weren’t a halftime distraction, they were the show. They’re the heartbeat of HBCU sports, and our unique approach to musical performance has been influencing broader marching culture for decades.
