During the kickoff of Mafiathon 3, Kai Cenat took the time to address the status of the long-awaited Nigerian school project that he agreed to help build. This announcement follows months of fans questioning the initiative, wondering if Kai Cenat was going to keep his word. A notable demonstration of accountability.
Back in March 2024, Cenat vowed support in building a Nigerian school while visiting the Makoko Children Development Foundation School and Orphanage in Lagos, Nigeria. After seeing the lack of resources and over 300 students crammed in one classroom, the Twitch streamer took it upon himself to make a pledge to help however he could. Once he returned to the U.S., he took things further by announcing plans to build a completely new school.
The following year, although donations were accumulating, the charitable project was mostly unreported. Fans repeatedly asked for updates, which were few and far between according to Dexerto. To clear the air, Cenat took the time to address concerns about the Nigerian project during his Mafiathon stream.
Two representatives working alongside the project, Fanny Moral with Enko Education of South Africa, and Chinedum Umeche, a partner with Banwo & Ighodalo of Nigeria, shared updates on the school's development. They stressed that it takes time to fully develop a complete operational school, considering construction, curriculum, and staff.
In addition, the school was originally going to be built in Makoko, Lagos, also known as the "Venice of Africa." This posed a challenge because of its waterways, as buildings are on stilts and float. So, the project was moved to Yaba, Lagos, a nearby location from Makoko. Now students from Makoko will still receive free education, while students traveling outside from those areas will pay tuition.
With Mafiathon 3, Cenat announced that 15% of revenue from his streams would be donated to help build the school. With the goal of reaching 1 million subscribers by the end of the subathon, this could be estimated to generate about $750,000, not including high-tier subscriptions and purchases according to Dexerto.
To continue transparency amongst his supporters, The Kai Cenat Foundation was established as a public charity. The foundation will have supervision over funds and ensure no personal profit is made. Currently, the account has a balance of over $1 million in donations so far. This also includes Cenat's own $128,579, providing the current school with computers while the project is in development.
The goal is to acquire $5 million to prepare for the first day of classes at the new school. "That's what we're aiming for," Cenat said, per Dexerto.
Kai Cenat’s subathons are always a big deal. Expect grandiose production, celebrity guest appearances, and plenty of chaos. But honestly, expect the unexpected. One moment he’s stressing over a video game, and the next he could be dancing with Miranda Cosgrove from iCarly.
